Event Medical Media Scan – September 2020 Edition

FOREWORD

The traditional summer event season came and gone without one single event held in Canada due to COVID-19.  It is certainly devastating for the event, sport and live entertainment industries (and all the associated suppliers, contractors and the loss of revenues for all levels of government).  As the re-opening continues across Canada, what can we expect come fall?  One thing for sure: masks will become ubiquitous!

Resources

NSPCC, a UK-based child protection charity noted child abuse has risen significantly during the pandemic.   An article published in the British Columbia Medical Journal is perhaps a timely reminder about the issue.

We have also linked the re-opening guidelines as published by Creative BC and ASPETAR, a Qatar-based sports medicine hospital.

Last but not least, while events have been put to a halt, event planners must still evaluate what they’d need moving forward. An article below may give you some ideas.

Research

The Canadian Medical Association Journal article gives a good summary on what we know so far on serology (i.e. antibody) testing of COVID-19.

As mentioned in the previous EMMS, the study by German scientists finally went ahead as planned. The result will certainly be factored into future governmental regulations on mass gatherings and events.

Health Personnel

During the height of the pandemic, the “7pm cheer” was one way that the public showed their appreciation of the front-line workers. Since then, however, reports have surfaced from healthcare workers facing housing issues from concerned landlords

As the pandemic drags on, the stress of caring for others and caring for oneself is adding up for many. A reminder some psychologists from the Canadian Psychological Association have chosen to volunteering their time to help those front-line healthcare workers. If you need the services, do reach out to one of the professionals listed here.

COVID Impact

This section explores the many different facets of the pandemic – in-person music festival is of course cancelled (in Canada anyway), so how do you pivot one mass undertaking into another?

On a healthcare front, “long haulers” of COVID patients continues to suffer long after they are considered recovered. Most recently in Hong Kong and in the US, reports have surfaced it is possible to be reinfected with COVID-19.

And how does vaccination help with herd immunity? Reuters created an interactive graphics page. I would encourage you to check it out.
