Event Medical Media Scan – May 2021 Edition

Foreword

As much of the country are in the 3rd wave of COVID with “circuit breakers” restrictions in place, the likelihood of mass gathering this summer is looking more remote by day. The pent up demand could make the 2022 season busier than ever.

This version of EMMS looks into the usual guidance and educational sessions that are open to the public. We also look at events being hosted in the UK – specifically under the British Government’s Events Research Programme into how mass gatherings may be held safely again. Take a few moments to read and learn!

Events

The Events Research Programme is the UK’s government way of assessing the risks and impact of mass gathering in the COVID and post-COVID world.  Several events including rave, sports event, music festival and business conference have been held as a trial for potentially bigger events to return.

While some of those are being held, others are being cancelled. The Great North Run, the world’s largest half marathon may be forced to cancel because of the difficulty in obtaining insurance coverage. The CEO of Aviva, one of the largest insurance provider, claims pandemic coverage will simply not exist after the COVID-19.

Event Medical Media Scan – April 2021 Edition

Foreword

As Canada enters into the “3rd wave” of COVID, Provinces begin to enact stricter measures in an attempt to control the toll on the healthcare system. The event season is looking less and less likely to happen this summer. However, trials in Europe may provide a proof of concept that could eventually make its way to Canada. This short edition of the EMMS look at various post-COVID mental health guidance, webinar on alcohol use disorder, and the usual clinical resource and vaccine tracker that you may find useful.

Mass Gatherings

Shambhala Music Festival, one of BC’s largest music festival, was the first one to announce a 2021 return date, only to officially confirm a postponement to 2022 is inevitable. Meanwhile, several smaller-scale concerts/music festivals have been trialed in various European countries.  Is there any hope that the 2021 event season be salvaged?

Event Medical Media Scan – March 2021 Edition

FOREWORD

A year ago, the world plunged into an unprecedented public health emergency with COVID-19. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 to be a global pandemic. Fast forward to March 2021, multiple vaccines have been approved for use in Canada (4 as of time of writing). While uncomfortable, most people have adjusted to the lockdown/stay home safe lives lifestyle.

As noted in the previous editions of EMMS, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and Spain have successfully hosted music festivals. In the United Kingdom, festival organizers are pushing the government to restrict access to music festivals for those who can prove their vaccination status.  As vaccination rates continue to go up, could the traditional summer event season be salvaged? One music festival in the US resorted to asking their guests to sign a COVID-19 liability waiver before attending.

Mass gathering

Multiple large music festivals such as the CMA Fest (US), The Great Escape Festival (UK) have announced cancellation, while others continue to hold on to hope that the event will continue.

The Minister of Health in BC has indicated to the public attending music festivals in the summer will likely not happen.

Elsewhere, the issue of COVID-19 “passport” is being discussed for travel purposes in some jurisdictions. If people have to prove vaccination status before crossing borders, could it lead to ultimately a freedom passport? What are some of the challenges that are bound to come up

Event Medical Media Scan – February 2021 Edition

FOREWORDS:

As we enter into the 11th month of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is perhaps getting harder and harder to remember the times when thousands of people gathered together for music festivals, sport events or for civic events like fireworks and parades.   As vaccines roll out continue across Canada, one may start to think: Where will Canada start hosting mass gatherings again?

Could sniffer dogs (for COVID, not drugs!) be in the future? How about specially designed “bubbles” or pits for patrons? We look back at some of the articles that may give us some insight into the future.

Future of Mass Gatherings

While Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan have successfully hosted large music festivals in the past few months, the grim news of event cancellation continues to add up: Glastonbury music festival in the UK, Ultra Music Festival in Miami and Coachella in California are among some of the well-known casualties of the 2021 mass gathering calendar.

COVID Impact

In the UK, the Supreme Court decided insurance companies cannot escape from claims and payouts due to COVID-19 losses. This is the first Commonwealth insurance case dealing with COVID-19 that ended up in the apex court. This could have a huge impact for similar lawsuits that are likely to pop up elsewhere.

As usual, we also picked an article looking at the film and TV industry for which we are now supporting from coast to coast to coast. Have you thought about what the actors/actresses thought about the COVID-19 protocols?

Event Medical Media Scan – January 2021 Edition

Foreword

Happy New Year! As “hindsight is 2020”, we welcome the new year knowing multiple approved vaccines for COVID-19 are being rolled out across Canada. While the majority of the population will unlikely to be fully vaccinated until the Fall, some event planners are itching to get their events back on track. Do you think we will be back seeing mass gathering in 2021? If one thing is certain – mass gathering comes with risk that has nothing to do with COVID. For examples, there have been fatalities at both of the music festivals recently concluded in New Zealand.  How will the post-COVID world look at medical teams at mass gatherings?

Live Music Industry

As reported in our last edition of the media scan, Taiwan successfully hosted a large music festival in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak around the world.

New Zealand hosted 2 large music festivals (Hidden Valley Music Festival and Rhythm and Vines Music Festival) in December, and both have unfortunately ended with tragedies with “medical events” unrelated to COVID.

Shambhala, a music festival in BC recently announced they are planning ahead with their August launch. Is it really possible to host a large mass gathering in 2021 in this part of the world?

Foreword:

With Halloween and our semi-annual ritual of clock change behind us, we are now deep into the Fall season.

The second wave is upon us – numbers across the most populated Provinces of Canada have all been trending upwards. Health officers across the country urge for caution as the worrying trend continues.

New clinical resources aside; this monthly post focuses on how COVID is affecting healthcare and some of the industries we are supporting.  We hope you find the resources/articles interesting. Stay safe!

COVID Impact on Healthcare

The impact of COVID to the healthcare system will take years to calculate – resource management on health screenings/elective surgeries, re-deployment of staff to “hot zone” and the cost of all the extra supplies needed to keep everyone safe.

The other side of the same coin is the impact COVID had on the people working in the system. One UK article claimed there are now more nurses died worldwide from COVID than during WW1. This is obviously a startling number and warning to the general public – having all the technology and equipment is great, but we still need the manpower to drive the care of patients.

As case number continues to trend upward – how are healthcare workers coping with the new realities? Several articles below gives you some Canadian, American and European perspectives.

COVID Impact on the industries we support

Film and TV production industries are large economic contributors in the Provinces of British Columbia and Ontario. The industry have been able to resume their work largely due to careful COVID-19 planning and testing.  Just exactly what kind of impact are we looking at? The two articles explains in detail.

On the other hand, the music industry have undoubtedly suffered far more serious setback. Without major music festivals or concerts, most musicians have resorted to doing steaming and virtual shows. Understandably such income would be far more limited than a large gig. The UK details the impact of COVID to its industry.

The Future of Music Festivals?

In order for mass gatherings to resume,  music festivals are innovating new ways to host their shows. Virtual events have been floating around for a few months, of course. We have also had live events with lots of physical distancing involved. How about using live stream holograms? Rapid testing of all the patrons on site?

Foreword

Fall is upon us. The traditional sense that fall is a time for renewal has, as with everything 2020, been disrupted. The loosening of restrictions over the summer across the world saw spikes in COVID-19 cases. Thankfully while case number is trending upward, the healthcare system remains in good shape across the country. The same cannot be said for testing sites, however. Long queues, overloaded labs and overworked public health contact tracing have refreshed concerns we will be heading into second wave that may even be worse than the first wave.

We have assembled lots of clinical resources on COVID-19 from leading clinicians, scientists and other authoritative sources to guide you along our next COVID-19 chapter.

Event Medical Media Scan – September 2020 Edition

FOREWORD

The traditional summer event season came and gone without one single event held in Canada due to COVID-19.  It is certainly devastating for the event, sport and live entertainment industries (and all the associated suppliers, contractors and the loss of revenues for all levels of government).  As the re-opening continues across Canada, what can we expect come fall?  One thing for sure: masks will become ubiquitous!
